The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has initiated legal proceedings against seven retailers for selling defective diapers that failed to meet required standards. The action follows a series of consumer complaints regarding baby diapers that deteriorated and tore during normal use.
Investigation officers from the CAA conducted comprehensive inquiries and raids on the implicated business establishments after receiving the initial complaints. The probe revealed that merchants were displaying and distributing both baby and adult diapers without proper identification, including the importer's name, address, and telephone contact information.
The enforcement action addresses significant breaches of consumer protection regulations. Retailers found to be in violation faced legal charges for failing to comply with mandatory labeling requirements and for distributing products of questionable quality without transparent product information.
The CAA's intervention underscores ongoing efforts to protect Sri Lankan consumers from substandard goods in the retail market. Authorities continue to investigate consumer complaints and conduct market surveillance to ensure that products meet established safety and quality standards before reaching consumers.
