Seven states, federal territories postpone National Sports Day due to haze

Seven Malaysian states and the Federal Territories have announced delays to National Sports Day festivities scheduled this week, citing hazardous air quality conditions affecting the region. The deferrals involve Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Johor, Kedah, Penang, Negeri Sembilan and Melaka, covering significant portions of the country's population and economic centres.

The postponements reflect ongoing concerns over transboundary haze that has periodically blanketed South and Southeast Asia, particularly during dry seasons. Officials in the affected regions determined that outdoor sporting events and public gatherings would pose health risks to participants and spectators, particularly vulnerable groups including children and the elderly.

National Sports Day, an annual celebration promoting physical fitness and community engagement across Malaysia, typically features a range of sporting competitions, demonstrations and public activities. Organisers indicated that rescheduled dates would be announced once air quality indices return to safer levels, allowing events to proceed as planned.

The Malaysian Department of Environment has continued monitoring atmospheric conditions across the peninsula. Residents in affected areas have been advised to limit outdoor activities and utilise air filtration measures as precautionary measures against poor air quality.
