Seventeen prisoners escaped from a Tamil Nadu jail Monday night after orchestrating an elaborate deception, according to officials investigating the incident. The convicts staged medical emergencies, claiming to suffer from epileptic seizures, to create a diversion that enabled their escape from the facility. Police received notification of the jailbreak at approximately 11:20 pm when prison authorities discovered the inmates missing, said Vijayendra S Bidari, Inspector General of Police for the South Zone. The coordinated nature of the escape suggests premeditated planning among the convicts. Authorities have launched a manhunt for the fugitives and initiated an investigation into security lapses that permitted the mass breakout. Details regarding the identities of the escaped prisoners and whether any have since been apprehended remain under review by law enforcement officials.
