Severe monsoon deficit threatens maize, ragi harvests in Karnataka

The Malnad region in Shivamogga district experienced a substantial rainfall deficit during the southwest monsoon season, according to data from the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre. Between June 1 and September 29, the region received 959 mm of rainfall against the normal average of 1,550 mm, representing a deficit of 38 per cent.

The significant shortfall in precipitation has raised concerns among farmers and agricultural officials about the prospects for maize and ragi crops, both critical staples in the region's agricultural economy. The moisture stress caused by insufficient rainfall during the critical growing months threatens to reduce crop yields and affect farm incomes across the Malnad belt.

The Malnad region, known for its coffee and spice plantations alongside cereal cultivation, is particularly vulnerable to monsoon variations due to its topography and soil characteristics. Agricultural departments are monitoring the situation closely as farmers assess potential losses and plan for the remainder of the agricultural season.

The rainfall deficit compounds challenges already faced by farmers in the region, including input costs and market fluctuations. State authorities have been urged to consider relief measures and explore irrigation support for affected cultivators facing potential harvest shortfalls.
