Severe rainfall deficit threatens kharif season in Markapuram district

Markapuram district is grappling with a severe rainfall deficit that threatens to undermine the current kharif agricultural season. From June 1 through the reporting period, the district recorded only 108.6 mm of rainfall against the climatological normal of 228.4 mm, representing a deficit of 52.5 percentage points.

The precipitation shortfall has directly impacted agricultural activity across the district. Kharif crop coverage has contracted sharply to 21.09% of the cultivable area, a stark decline from the 79% coverage achieved during the corresponding period last year. The dramatic year-on-year drop underscores the severity of moisture stress facing farmers.

The rainfall deficit compounds existing challenges for the kharif season, which depends heavily on southwest monsoon precipitation for crop establishment and growth.
