Severe turbulence triggered fatal heart attack on Singapore Airlines flight

A coroner's inquest in England concluded that Kitchen, a British national, suffered fatal cardiac arrest as a direct result of the severe turbulence encountered aboard Singapore Airlines Flight SQ006 on May 20, 2024. The aircraft, a Boeing 777, experienced sudden and intense turbulence while flying from London to Singapore, an incident that also injured numerous other passengers and crew members.

The coroner's determination follows a formal investigation into the circumstances of Kitchen's death. Medical evidence presented during the inquiry established that the physical stress induced by the violent turbulence triggered the cardiac event that proved fatal for the 73-year-old passenger.

The May incident marked one of the most significant turbulence events in recent commercial aviation history. Beyond Kitchen's death, dozens of passengers and crew sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious, with some hospitalized following the flight's emergency landing in Bangkok.

Singapore Airlines subsequently conducted its own investigation into the incident and implemented additional safety protocols. The carrier has maintained its commitment to passenger safety and has cooperated fully with aviation authorities examining the circumstances of the flight.
