Sextortion scam costs Delhi man nearly Rs 50 lakh

A man in Delhi lost nearly Rs 50 lakh in a sophisticated sextortion scam that exploited shock and fear to coerce payment from the victim. The incident highlights the growing menace of online blackmail schemes targeting unsuspecting individuals across the country.

The victim received an unexpected video call during which explicit content was displayed on screen. Alarmed by the nature of the call, the man immediately terminated the connection. However, the scammers subsequently made contact through other means, threatening to circulate compromising material unless the victim complied with their financial demands.

Fearing exposure and damage to his reputation, the victim succumbed to the pressure and transferred Rs 49 lakh to accounts controlled by the fraudsters over a period of time. The extortion continued with repeated threats and demands for additional payments.

Once the financial exploitation reached its limit, the victim approached law enforcement and filed a formal complaint detailing the scheme. Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the matter, including efforts to trace the perpetrators and recover the stolen funds.

Cyber crime experts warn that such sextortion schemes have become increasingly prevalent, often targeting individuals through compromised devices or social engineering tactics. Authorities advise citizens to be cautious about unsolicited video calls and to immediately report any extortion attempts to the police without paying the demanded amounts.
