SGIFF opens with controversial Korean thriller despite withdrawal calls

The Singapore International Film Festival has reaffirmed its commitment to screening The Assassin(s) as the festival's opening feature, brushing aside controversy surrounding the film's portrayal of a pivotal moment in South Korean history.

The Korean historical thriller centres on a fictionalised account of the 1974 assassination attempt that claimed the life of South Korea's first lady, Yuk Young-soo. The dramatised narrative has drawn criticism from those who argue the film takes unwarranted creative liberties with the real events and their historical significance.

Despite calls for the festival to withdraw the film from its programme, organisers have maintained their position. The Assassin(s) is scheduled to screen on 21 and 22 October as part of the festival's opening activities.

The film brings together prominent Korean actors including Yoo Hae-jin, Park Hae-il and Lee Min-ho in leading roles. The festival's decision to open with the title underscores ongoing debates about artistic freedom and historical representation in cinema across the region.
