Shah challenges Gandhi over alleged infiltrators on electoral rolls

Union Home Minister Amit Shah intensified his political offensive against the Congress party on Wednesday, levelling accusations that the opposition is resisting the removal of names from electoral rolls due to the presence of alleged infiltrators.

Shah contended that Congress's opposition to voter deletions stems from the inclusion of undocumented immigrants in the voter lists. "They can beat their chests as much as they want about infiltrators, but they oppose removal from voter rolls because their names are there," Shah said, according to statements reported in New Delhi.

Challenging Congress leader Rahul Gandhi directly, Shah invited him to write to the Prime Minister on the issue. The Home Minister indicated the government's readiness to convene a special session of Parliament to discuss and debate the matter comprehensively.

The remarks reflect ongoing tensions between the ruling coalition and Congress over immigration and electoral integrity. The dispute centres on ongoing exercises to cleanse electoral registers, a process that has become increasingly contentious amid concerns about illegal cross-border migration in several Indian states.
