Sharadiya Navratri 2026 to begin October 11, auspicious timing announced

Sharadiya Navratri, one of the most significant festivals in the Hindu calendar, will begin on October 11, 2026, marking the start of nine days of worship and celebration across India. The festival, which falls during the autumn season, is observed to commemorate the victory of Goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mahishasura.

The first day of Navratri will feature Ghatasthapana, also known as Kalash Sthapana, the ritual installation of the sacred pot symbolizing the womb of the universe. Devotees perform this ceremony by sowing barley seeds in soil-filled vessels, which are kept in prayer rooms throughout the festival period. The auspicious timing for conducting these rituals has been determined according to traditional Hindu astronomical calculations to ensure the ceremonies are performed at the most propitious moments.

During the nine-day festival, devotees observe fasts, perform pujas, and recite hymns dedicated to different forms of Goddess Durga. Each day of Navratri is associated with a specific manifestation of the goddess, with distinct rituals and offerings prescribed for each day. The festival culminates on Vijayadashami, the tenth day, which commemorates the triumph of good over evil.

Vijayadashami in 2026 will mark the conclusion of the festival celebrations, when devotees seek blessings for success and prosperity. The festival holds deep spiritual significance across India, with regional variations in observances and customs. Temples, homes, and community spaces are elaborately decorated, and special prasad offerings are prepared as part of the traditional celebrations throughout this auspicious period.
