Shardiya Navratri 2026 begins October 11, key dates announced

Shardiya Navratri 2026 will begin on October 11, marking the start of nine days of worship dedicated to the nine forms of goddess Durga. The festival, observed across India and South Asia, culminates in Dussehra celebrations that mark the symbolic victory of good over evil.

The festival begins with Ghatasthapna, a ritual involving the sowing of barley seeds in sanctified soil, symbolizing new beginnings and prosperity. This ceremony traditionally initiates the nine-day period during which devotees worship different manifestations of the goddess, each associated with distinct qualities and spiritual significance.

Ashtami and Navami, the eighth and ninth days of Navratri respectively, hold particular importance in the festive calendar. These days are marked by intensified prayer rituals and are considered especially auspicious for devotional practices. Dussehra, celebrated on the tenth day following Navami, concludes the festival period with grand celebrations across regions.

During Navratri, devotees observe fasts, visit temples, and participate in cultural programs featuring classical music and dance forms. The festival period also witnesses the preparation of traditional sweets and ceremonial meals. Religious observances during this time are believed to invoke blessings for health, prosperity, and spiritual well-being.
