Shell posts bumper profits as refining margins hit record highs

Shell has announced significantly elevated earnings, buoyed by exceptional performance in its oil refining operations. Refining margins—a key measure of profitability in converting crude oil into usable products—reached US$42 per barrel, nearly double the US$24 level seen in the prior period.

The surge in refining profitability comes amid constrained global refining capacity, as several major refineries have undergone maintenance or faced operational challenges. This structural tightness has created favourable pricing conditions for refiners, particularly those with modern, efficient facilities like Shell's.

The second-record profit result underscores the volatility of energy sector earnings, which swing sharply based on crude prices, refining spreads, and demand conditions. Shell's downstream operations have benefited from the current market environment, offsetting softer conditions in other segments of the energy industry.

The company's strong financial performance comes as energy majors navigate the global energy transition and invest in renewable capacity. However, traditional oil and gas operations remain central to Shell's near-term earnings power, particularly when global refining conditions tighten.
