Shifting criteria could derail Korea's wartime command handover from US

Seoul's Defence Ministry spokesperson issued the warning on Thursday, stating that moving goalposts regarding the conditions for wartime command transfer risk making the handover unachievable. The statement underscores South Korea's frustration with what officials perceive as shifting benchmarks for the transition, a process both nations have worked towards for years.

The transfer of wartime operational control from the United States to South Korea has been a contentious issue in the alliance, with South Korea eager to assume full command of its forces during conflict while the US has sought assurances that Seoul meets certain military and technological standards. Defence officials in Seoul have previously indicated that unclear or constantly revised criteria complicate planning and implementation.

The timing of the handover has remained unresolved despite decades of discussion. South Korea maintains that it now possesses the military capabilities necessary to assume wartime command, though the United States has historically raised questions about readiness and interoperability. The two allies have worked through the Combined Forces Command structure since the Korean War armistice in 1953.

The Defence Ministry's statement reflects broader strategic discussions between Washington and Seoul about the future nature of their security alliance and South Korea's role in regional defence. Officials emphasise that establishing clear, consistent criteria is essential for any meaningful progress on the wartime command transfer issue.
