Shigella outbreak in Kerala's Thrissur district triggers health alert

A sudden spike in Shigella infections has raised concerns among public health officials in Kerala's Thrissur district. The District Medical Officer confirmed that ten cases of the bacterial infection surfaced over a nine-day period, with seven concentrated in the Tholur area. All affected patients have responded well to treatment and are reported to be recovering without complications.

The Shigella outbreak comes as Thrissur grapples with other infectious disease cases. October data showed 39 dengue fever cases and four leptospirosis cases across the district, adding to the disease surveillance burden for health authorities. The cumulative number of cases has prompted district health officials to intensify monitoring and implement preventive measures.

Shigella, a bacterium that causes acute diarrheal illness, typically spreads through contaminated food and water or poor sanitation conditions. The concentration of cases in Tholur has led authorities to investigate potential common sources and review water quality and hygiene practices in the affected area. Health officials have advised residents to maintain proper sanitation standards and food safety practices to prevent further transmission.

District authorities have asked healthcare facilities to remain alert for additional cases and ensure prompt reporting. Public health teams are conducting contact tracing and community awareness drives to contain the spread and prevent a wider outbreak in the region.
