Shipping ministry initiatives target 56 lakh jobs, massive emissions cut

Two major maritime initiatives launched by India's shipping ministry are poised to transform the country's coastal economy and environmental footprint. The Coastal Cargo Promotion Scheme and Cruise Bharat Mission together are projected to create employment for more than 56 lakh people across ports, logistics, hospitality, and related sectors.

The employment generation is expected to span direct and indirect job creation throughout India's maritime ecosystem, from port operations to tourism services. The initiatives will boost domestic shipping and promote cruise tourism along the Indian coastline, potentially channeling greater economic activity through existing and new port infrastructure.

Environmental benefits form a key component of the schemes, with projections indicating a reduction of 16 million tonnes in carbon emissions through modal shift from road to coastal shipping. This aligns with India's broader sustainability goals and commitment to reducing transport-sector emissions.

The cruise segment will receive particular focus, with the government allocating ₹1,500 crore for constructing a dedicated cruise terminal in Puri, Odisha. The facility is expected to position the eastern coastal city as a major cruise destination and gateway for domestic and international cruise tourism in India.
