Shipping operators call for scrapping of RoRo terminal fees

CEBU CITY — Domestic shipping operators are urging the national government to eliminate roll-on, roll-off (RoRo) terminal fees as a measure to reduce logistics expenses and alleviate cost pressures throughout the economy.

The Philippine Coastwise Shipping Association contends that existing terminal charges significantly increase transportation costs for shipments moving between ports. The group argues these added expenses ultimately burden businesses and consumers facing persistent inflation.

RoRo terminals, which handle vehicles and cargo that are driven on and off vessels, represent a critical link in the country's domestic maritime transport network. Industry operators say the terminal fees add unnecessary costs to an already expensive logistics system affecting inter-island commerce.

The association's appeal comes as the Marcos administration considers various policy measures to address rising prices affecting household budgets and business operations across the Philippines. Proponents of removing the terminal fees contend the move could have cascading benefits throughout the supply chain by lowering transportation expenses.
