Rail passengers faced extended delays of between four to five hours following a malfunction in the signalling system that impacted both local and express rail services on Friday. The KTM Komuter network, which serves the greater Kuala Lumpur area, and the ETS intercity rail service were among the affected routes, causing disruption to thousands of daily commuters and long-distance travellers.
The signalling system failure forced train operators to implement reduced service frequencies and staggered departures as a precautionary measure while the technical issue was addressed. Passengers reported significant wait times at major stations, with some services suspended temporarily during peak hours.
KTM officials confirmed that a component within the signalling infrastructure had sustained damage, though the exact cause remains under investigation. Engineers were deployed to assess the extent of the damage and implement repairs to restore normal service operations.
The incident underscores ongoing concerns about Malaysia's rail infrastructure maintenance, particularly as commuter demand continues to grow across the Klang Valley region.
