Sikkim deploys monitoring sensors at 16 high-risk glacial lakes

Following devastating floods in neighbouring Nepal, Sikkim has begun installing early-warning sensors at 16 glacial lakes identified as vulnerable to outburst events. The state is taking proactive measures to protect communities downstream from potential glacial lake outburst floods.

Sikkim has initiated a critical monitoring programme at 16 glacial lakes classified as high-risk following a comprehensive vulnerability assessment. The move comes in the wake of catastrophic flooding triggered by glacial lake outburst events in Nepal, highlighting the urgent need for disaster preparedness across the Himalayan region.

The state is home to over 400 glacial lakes of varying sizes, making it particularly susceptible to potential outburst hazards. Of these, only 16 have been identified as posing significant risk to downstream populations and infrastructure, prompting the deployment of sensor technology to enable real-time monitoring and early warning capabilities.

The installation of sensors represents a significant step in Sikkim's disaster risk reduction strategy, allowing authorities to detect sudden changes in water levels, temperature, and other critical parameters that might indicate an impending outburst. Such early warning systems are essential for evacuating residents from vulnerable areas and minimizing potential casualties.

Climate change-induced rapid glacial retreat across the Himalayas has increased the frequency and severity of glacial lake outburst floods in recent years.
