Sikkim High Court launches climate justice PIL after Nepal disaster

The Sikkim High Court has taken suo moto cognizance of climate justice issues, filing a Public Interest Litigation in response to the disaster situation in neighbouring Nepal. The move reflects growing judicial concern over environmental accountability and infrastructure resilience in the region.

The court has constituted the Railway Ministry and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHAI) as primary respondents in the matter. Additionally, the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority and the State Power Department have been made parties to the litigation, indicating the court's comprehensive approach to examining infrastructure vulnerabilities and emergency preparedness.

The PIL seeks to address systemic gaps in climate adaptation and disaster mitigation strategies across critical infrastructure sectors. By implicating both national and state-level authorities, the court appears positioned to examine coordination mechanisms and accountability frameworks for managing climate-related risks.
