SIM Card Registration Law Falls Short in Cybercrime Fight: PNP

The Philippine National Police-Anti-Cybercrime Group has identified persistent gaps in the country's SIM Card Registration Act, noting that nearly all recent cybercrime incidents continue to involve registered subscriber identity modules. Major General Wilson Casil Asueta, director of the PNP-ACG, raised the concerns during a briefing on Tuesday, underscoring the inadequacy of current regulatory measures in combating online crimes.

Despite the law's implementation, criminals have found ways to exploit the registration system, using legitimate SIM cards to conduct fraudulent activities ranging from scams to identity theft. The findings suggest that registration alone has proven insufficient as a deterrent or preventive measure against cybercriminals operating within Philippine territory or targeting Filipino nationals.

The PNP-ACG has recommended several amendments to strengthen enforcement mechanisms and close loopholes in the existing legislation. Officials are seeking broader regulatory authority to monitor SIM card usage patterns and faster protocols for blocking suspect accounts linked to criminal activity.
