Simon Cowell, the renowned television personality and talent show judge, contributed substantially to shutting down a dog meat farm in South Korea in 2018 through a £25,000 donation to Humane Society International. The funding facilitated the rescue operation that freed nearly 200 dogs and puppies from the facility where they had endured poor living conditions and lacked adequate veterinary care.
The rescued animals, many bearing signs of untreated injuries and malnutrition, were removed from the farm as part of a comprehensive closure effort. Animal welfare workers documented significant health and welfare concerns among the dogs at the facility before the operation commenced.
Following their rescue, the dogs were distributed to animal shelters and rescue organizations across four countries to receive necessary medical treatment and care. The animals were transferred to facilities in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and the Netherlands, where they could be assessed, rehabilitated, and prepared for adoption into new homes.
The operation reflected growing international pressure to curtail the dog meat trade in South Korea, where animal welfare advocates have increasingly challenged the practice. Humane Society International, which coordinated the rescue, has worked alongside local partners to improve animal welfare standards in the region.
