Gastroenterologists across the region are increasingly emphasizing lifestyle modifications as a first line of defence against acid reflux, a condition affecting millions of Indians. Simple changes to eating and sleeping patterns can significantly reduce symptoms by lowering pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter, the valve responsible for preventing stomach acid from rising into the food pipe.

One of the most effective measures involves timing meals appropriately. Experts recommend waiting two to three hours after eating before lying down, allowing the stomach adequate time to digest and empty its contents. This interval reduces pressure on the esophageal sphincter and decreases the likelihood of acid backing up into the throat.

Beyond meal timing, gastroenterologists suggest several complementary approaches to managing reflux symptoms. These include avoiding heavy, fatty, or spicy foods that can trigger discomfort, limiting caffeine and alcohol consumption, and maintaining a healthy body weight. Elevating the head of the bed by four to six inches can also help prevent nighttime symptoms.

Medical professionals stress that while over-the-counter antacids and prescription medications remain valuable tools, lifestyle interventions often provide sustainable relief. For individuals experiencing persistent or severe symptoms, consulting a healthcare provider remains essential to rule out underlying conditions and develop a personalized management plan.
