Simple DIY fixes for doors dragging on floors at home

A dragging door is often the result of loose hinge screws or wood swelling due to humidity—issues that require neither carpentry expertise nor specialized equipment to address. The problem typically worsens over time if left unattended, potentially causing damage to both the door frame and flooring.

The first step is to inspect the door's hinges carefully. Loose screws are frequently the culprit, as they allow the door to sag slightly and catch on the floor. Using a standard screwdriver, homeowners should tighten all visible hinge screws methodically, checking the door's clearance after each adjustment.

If tightening screws does not resolve the issue, moisture absorption in the wooden door may be the cause. This is particularly common in India's humid climate, where seasonal changes can cause wood to expand and contract. In such cases, examining the bottom of the door for signs of swelling or warping is advisable.

For moisture-related problems, allowing the door to dry in sunlight and ensuring adequate ventilation around the frame can help. Applying a moisture-resistant sealant to the door's bottom edge may prevent future issues. Most homeowners can complete these repairs independently, avoiding the need for costly carpenter visits.
