Simple household items can restore grimy switchboards to like-new condition

Switchboards and electrical outlets mounted on walls gradually accumulate dust, oil residue and fingerprint marks, detracting from their appearance and making living spaces look unkempt. The problem is especially pronounced in kitchens and cooking areas, where grease splatters and cooking fumes leave sticky, discoloured deposits that are difficult to remove with ordinary cleaning methods.

Household items commonly found in Indian homes can effectively restore switchboards to their original condition. Vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice and mild soap solutions are all suitable for dissolving grease and grime without damaging the plastic or metal surfaces. For stubborn buildup, a paste made from baking soda and water can be applied and left to sit briefly before wiping clean.

Electrical safety must remain the primary concern when cleaning switchboards and outlet covers. Residents should switch off power at the main circuit breaker before beginning any cleaning work. All cleaning solutions should be applied to a soft cloth rather than sprayed directly on the switchboard to prevent liquid seepage into electrical components. Switchboards should be allowed to dry completely before power is restored.

Regular maintenance prevents heavy accumulation and reduces cleaning difficulty. Wiping switchboards monthly with a dry or slightly damp cloth can minimise dust and grease buildup, extending the time between deeper cleaning sessions and maintaining the aesthetic appearance of home interiors.
