Simple Kitchen Tip Keeps Sugar, Jaggery Fresh and Ant-Free

Sugar and jaggery are kitchen essentials in Indian households, but their storage presents a common challenge. Ants frequently infest containers holding these sweeteners, while humidity causes them to stick together and become unusable.

The clumping problem typically occurs during monsoon months or in humid climates, rendering sugar and jaggery difficult to measure and use. Meanwhile, ant infestations contaminate these ingredients and create broader pest control issues in the kitchen.

Homemakers can address both issues by placing a single bay leaf, or a few cloves, inside sugar and jaggery containers. These aromatic items create an inhospitable environment for ants while absorbing excess moisture that causes clumping. The natural compounds in these spices deter insects without affecting the taste or safety of the stored ingredients.

Alternatively, storing containers in airtight jars and placing them on elevated shelves away from floor level reduces ant access. Some households also place containers inside larger vessels filled with water, creating a moat that ants cannot cross. These traditional preservation methods, when combined with proper sealing, keep pantry staples fresh for extended periods.
