Singapore air quality deteriorates as haze intensifies during F1 weekend

Singapore's air quality took a sharp turn for the worse on Friday as the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index in the central region hit 192 at 5pm, marking the most severe reading recorded during this year's haze season.

The deterioration comes as the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix weekend gets underway at the Marina Bay Street Circuit. The timing presents a challenge for event organisers and attendees, with air quality forecasts suggesting conditions may worsen further in the coming hours.

The PSI reading, which measures concentrations of particulate matter and gaseous pollutants, indicates unhealthy air conditions across the island. Very Unhealthy range begins at 201 on the PSI scale, meaning current levels are approaching levels that pose significant health risks to the general population.

Authorities have not issued immediate health advisories, though residents and visitors are typically urged to limit outdoor activities and consider wearing N95 masks when air quality reaches unhealthy ranges. The National Environment Agency has been monitoring atmospheric conditions as transboundary haze from regional sources continues to affect Singapore.

Motorists and the public are advised to stay updated on air quality readings and follow official health guidance as conditions develop over the weekend.
