Singapore air quality hits year-high as haze blankets central region

The 24-hour PSI reading of 224 recorded in Singapore's central region marked a significant deterioration in air quality, surpassing all previous measurements in 2024. The very unhealthy classification indicates that members of the general public may begin to experience health effects, while people with respiratory or heart conditions face more serious risks.

PM2.5 particulate matter—fine particles measuring 2.5 micrometers or smaller—registered elevated concentrations throughout Singapore. These microscopic particles can penetrate deep into the respiratory system and enter the bloodstream, posing particular concern for vulnerable populations including children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions.

The National Environment Agency advised residents to reduce outdoor activities and keep windows closed during periods of poor air quality. Individuals experiencing respiratory symptoms were encouraged to seek medical attention, while those requiring respiratory protection were advised to use properly fitted N95 masks.

The haze event underscores the region's ongoing air quality challenges, which are frequently attributed to transboundary pollution originating from neighboring areas. Singapore's air quality typically improves during monsoon seasons when wind patterns help disperse pollutants.
