Singapore, Argentina strengthen ties as Mercosur trade pact takes effect

The Mercosur-Singapore Free Trade Agreement has officially come into effect, opening new opportunities for bilateral commerce between Singapore and the four-member South American trade bloc comprising Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.

Under the agreement, import tariffs will be eliminated on 96 per cent of products, with the phased removal of duties to occur over a period of up to 15 years depending on product classification. The pact encompasses goods across multiple sectors and represents a significant expansion of the region's trade footprint beyond Asia-Pacific.

Singapore has prioritised deepening trade relationships with emerging markets in South America, where the island nation sees opportunities for economic expansion. The agreement is expected to facilitate greater market access for Singaporean exporters and investors while opening doors for Mercosur member states to tap the city-state's established position as a regional trading and financial hub.

The pact follows years of negotiation between Singapore's trade representatives and Mercosur officials. For Argentine businesses and those across the broader South American bloc, the tariff elimination opens pathways to Singapore's well-developed supply chain networks and access to Asia-Pacific markets.

The agreement underscores Singapore's continued commitment to expanding its free trade network globally, complementing existing bilateral and multilateral trade arrangements across the region.
