Singapore backs 71% of UN human rights review recommendations

Singapore has accepted 71 per cent of human rights recommendations made by United Nations member states during its most recent Universal Periodic Review, marking an improvement over its support levels in earlier cycles.

The Universal Periodic Review is a key mechanism of the UN Human Rights Council that assesses the human rights records of all 193 UN member states on a rotating basis. Countries undergoing the process receive recommendations from peer nations, which they can then accept, partially accept, or reject.

Singapore's increased endorsement rate demonstrates the government's growing receptiveness to international human rights scrutiny. The recommendations typically cover areas such as civil liberties, labour rights, freedom of expression, and the treatment of vulnerable populations.

The city-state has committed to implementing the accepted recommendations as part of its broader efforts to strengthen human rights protections domestically while maintaining its own regulatory and security frameworks.

Singapore periodically undergoes the Universal Periodic Review process, with each cycle providing an opportunity for the government to report on progress in human rights implementation and respond to international feedback from fellow UN member states.
