Singapore battery recycler launches Tuas facility, secures US$7.6m funding

NEU Battery Materials, a Singapore-based startup focused on battery recycling, has commenced operations at its new processing plant in Tuas, marking a significant development in the region's efforts to establish a circular economy for EV battery materials.

The facility is engineered to handle 1,300 tonnes of battery materials per year, extracting critical materials such as lithium that can be reused in the production of new batteries. However, the company has indicated it will not immediately operate at full nameplate capacity as it ramps up operations and scales its processing capabilities.

The expansion has been backed by US$7.6 million in funding, underscoring investor confidence in battery recycling as a strategic industry for Singapore. The investment reflects growing regional demand for sustainable solutions to manage the rising volumes of spent EV batteries expected as electric vehicle adoption accelerates across Asia.

The Tuas plant represents a step toward reducing Singapore's dependence on imported battery materials and establishing local expertise in a sector increasingly viewed as critical to the green economy. As EV sales continue to climb across Southeast Asia, battery recycling infrastructure is expected to become increasingly valuable for both environmental and economic reasons.
