Singapore battles elevated haze as air quality deteriorates across island

Singapore's air quality deteriorated significantly, with the majority of the island's monitoring regions registering unhealthy readings as fine particulate matter concentrations climbed to concerning levels. The National Environment Agency reported that four out of five regions breached the unhealthy threshold for PM2.5, the microscopic pollutants most harmful to respiratory health.

PM2.5 measurements remained persistently elevated across all monitoring stations throughout the day, indicating a widespread haze event affecting the densely populated city-state. The fine particles, which measure 2.5 micrometres or smaller, can penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream, posing particular risks to children, elderly persons, and those with existing respiratory conditions.

Authorities advised residents in affected areas to limit outdoor activities and consider wearing N95 masks when venturing outside. Schools and workplaces were urged to implement precautionary measures, including reduced outdoor physical activities and enhanced indoor air filtration. The health ministry reiterated guidance for at-risk groups to remain indoors and monitor air quality updates closely.

Meteorological patterns and regional atmospheric conditions were cited as contributing factors to the haze formation. Authorities indicated they would continue monitoring the situation and issue regular updates as conditions evolved over the coming hours.
