Singapore battles persistent haze with unhealthy air quality across island
Fine particulate matter levels have surged across all regions of Singapore, with the western areas recording very unhealthy air quality readings. The haze persisted through early morning hours on Monday, prompting health advisories for vulnerable populations.

Air quality deteriorated significantly across Singapore on Monday as persistent haze blanketed the island, with fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations reaching unhealthy levels in most areas by 7am. The National Environment Agency reported elevated one-hour PM2.5 readings across all regions, signalling a widespread air quality event affecting the densely populated city-state.
The western region of Singapore experienced the most severe conditions, with the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) climbing into the very unhealthy category. This marked a notable worsening from typical air quality levels and posed particular concerns for residents with respiratory conditions and cardiovascular vulnerabilities.
The Ministry of Health advised vulnerable groups, including the elderly, young children, and individuals with chronic illnesses, to limit outdoor activities and consider wearing N95 masks if venturing outside. Schools and public institutions remained alert for potential measures should air quality continue to deteriorate.
Authorities monitored the situation closely, with meteorologists tracking the source and expected duration of the haze. Regional transboundary haze events have affected Singapore with increasing frequency in recent years, prompting ongoing discussions between neighbouring countries on pollution control measures and environmental cooperation.
