Singapore is moving forward with its commitment to green aviation as the city-state prepares to source sustainable aviation fuel meeting stringent environmental standards. The initiative represents a significant step toward reducing the aviation sector's carbon footprint, a key component of Singapore's broader climate goals.
The procurement process will commence with a tender expected by mid-December, according to the timeline announced. This tender will seek suppliers capable of delivering SAF that achieves at least a 40 percent reduction in lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional jet fuel.
Deliveries of the blended fuel are projected to begin in June 2027, providing a window for suppliers to establish supply chains and production capacity. Sustainable aviation fuel is produced from renewable sources such as used cooking oil, agricultural waste, and other biomass, and can be blended with conventional jet fuel for use in existing aircraft without requiring engine modifications.
The move aligns Singapore's aviation industry with international sustainability efforts, as airlines and regulators worldwide increasingly prioritize decarbonization. Singapore's push for SAF adoption reflects the aviation sector's role in meeting net-zero emissions targets while maintaining operational efficiency and economic competitiveness.
