Singapore doubles down on Indonesia investment despite regional haze crisis

Singapore has maintained its position as Indonesia's largest foreign investor in the first nine months of the year, channeling approximately 14 billion USD despite ongoing transboundary haze challenges affecting the region. The investment underscores Singapore's confidence in Indonesia's economic prospects even as Southeast Asian nations mobilize joint efforts to address seasonal air quality concerns.

Singapore's continued investment commitment to Indonesia reflects strong bilateral economic ties, with data from Indonesia's Investment Coordinating Board showing the city-state accounted for nearly 30 percent of the country's total foreign direct investment during the January-September period. The 14 billion USD in Singaporean capital inflows reinforced the nation's status as a primary economic partner for Jakarta, signaling resilience in investor confidence amid environmental challenges.

The sustained investment activity comes as regional governments intensify their response to seasonal haze pollution. Cambodia has approved a 690 million USD initiative to combat transboundary air pollution, while Malaysia has called on ASEAN member states to coordinate efforts in addressing the recurring crisis. Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar have also announced joint measures to tackle cross-border haze, reflecting growing recognition of the environmental issue's impact across the region.

The haze phenomenon, which typically peaks during harvest seasons when agricultural burning occurs, continues to pose public health and environmental concerns across Southeast Asia. Despite these challenges, foreign investment flows into major regional economies like Indonesia remain robust, suggesting that companies view the disruptions as temporary obstacles rather than fundamental barriers to long-term business operations.
