Singapore expands legal aid eligibility for lower-income households

The per capita household income threshold for civil legal aid will increase to $1,650 from the current $1,050, effective October 1. The adjustment represents a 57 per cent increase in the eligibility ceiling, aimed at extending assistance to a larger pool of lower-income residents seeking legal representation. The move comes as Singapore continues efforts to enhance access to justice for financially disadvantaged members of society. Civil legal aid covers assistance in matters such as family law, housing disputes, and personal injury claims. The higher threshold is expected to enable more residents to qualify for subsidized or fully funded legal services through the Legal Aid Bureau, reducing financial barriers to pursuing legitimate claims and defences. Officials have noted the adjustment reflects cost-of-living considerations and aims to ensure vulnerable populations can access the legal system effectively.
