The Singapore Grand Prix sprint event faced a weather-induced postponement on Friday after an unexpected downpour drenched the Marina Bay circuit shortly before the scheduled 5pm start time. The sudden deluge sent spectators and officials scrambling for shelter while track officials assessed racing conditions.
Pooled water at turns 2 and 3 presented immediate safety hazards, prompting the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) to delay proceedings pending track clearance and improved weather conditions. Ground crews worked to manage water drainage while race management monitored the situation.
Following the weather delay, officials confirmed the sprint would proceed once conditions stabilised. The race is part of the Singapore Grand Prix weekend, one of Formula 1's most demanding events due to the circuit's tight urban layout and night-time racing requirements.
The Marina Bay street circuit regularly poses challenges for both drivers and organisers, with its narrow confines and lack of run-off areas making weather management particularly critical for safety compliance.
