Singapore fire service tests robotic unit for electric vehicle blazes
The Singapore Civil Defence Force is trialling an unmanned robotic system designed to safely tackle fires in electric vehicles. The remote-operated unit aims to protect firefighters from the unique hazards posed by EV battery fires.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) has begun operational trials of an advanced robotic firefighting system specifically engineered to handle electric vehicle fires, which present distinct challenges compared to conventional vehicle blazes.
The unmanned unit, operated remotely by trained personnel, allows firefighters to maintain a safe distance while combating EV fires. Electric vehicle battery fires are particularly hazardous due to the risk of thermal runaway, spontaneous reignition, and toxic fume release, making remote intervention a significant safety advancement.
The robotic system represents part of the SCDF's broader preparedness strategy as electric vehicles become increasingly prevalent on Singapore's roads. The trials will help determine the unit's effectiveness in various fire scenarios and inform deployment protocols across the force.
The technology aligns with Singapore's commitment to adopting innovative emergency response solutions. As EV adoption accelerates across the island nation, fire services must continually adapt equipment and procedures to address emerging risks while protecting both personnel and the public.
The SCDF has not yet announced a timeline for full operational deployment or whether the system will be rolled out across multiple fire stations following the trial period.
