Singapore firm recovers US$12.8m in cross-border email scam case

The Singapore Police Force, working in partnership with Cambodian law enforcement and OCBC Bank, traced and recovered US$12.8 million that had been fraudulently transferred to a bank account in Cambodia. The funds were stolen through a business email compromise attack targeting the petrochemical firm, a scheme in which fraudsters impersonate legitimate business contacts to authorise unauthorised transactions.

The successful recovery demonstrates the growing effectiveness of cross-border cooperation in tackling financial crime in Southeast Asia. The coordination between Singapore's police, their Cambodian counterparts, and the banking sector proved crucial in identifying the fraudulent account and securing the return of the stolen funds.

Business email compromise remains a significant threat to companies across the region, with cybercriminals increasingly targeting high-value transactions and exploiting gaps in corporate verification procedures. The case underscores the importance of robust email security protocols and the need for employees to verify payment instructions through alternative communication channels before processing large transfers.

The Police Force has urged businesses to remain vigilant against such scams and to report suspected fraud immediately to authorities and their financial institutions to maximise recovery prospects.
