Singapore Grand Prix Gets Exemption from Container Deposit Scheme

The Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix will not be subject to Singapore's container deposit return scheme during the race weekend, according to an announcement on the event's official website. Drinks sold within Circuit Park will therefore not carry the mandatory 10-cent deposit that applies to beverage containers across the rest of the island.

The exemption has been granted by the National Environment Agency (NEA), Singapore's environmental regulator. The decision reflects the logistical complexities of implementing the deposit scheme at large-scale events where high volumes of beverages are consumed and rapid turnover is essential.

Singapore's container deposit return scheme, which requires consumers to pay a 10-cent deposit on most drink containers, aims to boost recycling rates and reduce litter. The initiative applies to cans, glass bottles, and plastic bottles sold across retail outlets and food establishments.

The F1 Singapore Grand Prix, held annually at the Marina Bay street circuit, attracts tens of thousands of spectators over the race weekend. The exemption allows event organizers to streamline beverage service operations while the broader recycling incentive remains in effect elsewhere in Singapore.
