Singapore gym charges member S$65 for 'tailgating' incident at Tampines facility

A Singapore resident was slapped with a S$65 charge by Anytime Fitness after a stranger gained entry to the Tampines gym location by following him through the door, according to reports. The member said he was unaware of the breach until he received the billing notification from the fitness center.
Tailgating, also known as piggybacking, occurs when an unauthorized person enters a restricted area by following closely behind an authorized member. Gyms typically implement such charges as a security measure to discourage members from inadvertently allowing access to non-members and to cover the costs of security incidents.
The incident highlights the tension between gym security protocols and member convenience. While fitness centers maintain access restrictions to protect facilities and ensure safety, unexpected charges can create friction with paying members who may not intentionally facilitate breaches.
Anytime Fitness operates numerous locations across Singapore. The case underscores broader questions about how gyms communicate security policies and billing consequences to members, and whether charges for security breaches should fall on members who may have little control over tailgating incidents.
