Singapore increases Causeway taxi quota; new ride-hail operators approved

Singapore's land transport regulator has expanded cross-border mobility options by increasing the Causeway taxi quota to 500 vehicles and licensing two new ride-hailing operators for Malaysia-Singapore routes.

CDG Zig and a Malaysian firm have been granted licences to conduct cross-border ride-hailing services beginning November 16. The approvals mark a significant expansion of the sector, which previously operated under more restrictive conditions.

The move brings the total number of ride-hail operators permitted to serve the Causeway corridor to three. The expanded quota for traditional taxis reflects growing demand for transport connectivity between Singapore and Johor Bahru, with the 500-vehicle limit representing a substantial increase from previous allocations.

The licensing decisions come as both Singapore and Malaysia seek to facilitate smoother cross-border travel while maintaining regulatory oversight of transport services. The November 16 implementation date gives operators time to prepare for operations under the new framework.
