Singapore is piloting a six-month programme to make electronics recycling more accessible, allowing residents to return used phones and laptops at dedicated collection lockers and Shopee pickup points. Singapore launches convenient e-waste recycling trial with locker pickups

Singapore's waste management authorities have commenced a half-year trial programme designed to streamline the recycling process for discarded electronic devices. Under the scheme, residents can deposit used smartphones, laptops and other electronics at specially installed lockers or designated Shopee collection points, eliminating the need for direct trips to recycling facilities.

The trial reflects Singapore's commitment to improving e-waste handling infrastructure and promoting circular economy practices. Since launching organised e-waste collection initiatives in 2021, the island nation has successfully recovered more than 45,000 tonnes of electronic waste, diverting significant quantities of materials from landfills.

The locker and collection point model is expected to increase participation rates by offering greater convenience and accessibility. Shopee's involvement as a collection partner leverages the e-commerce platform's existing network of pickup locations across the island, potentially reaching a broader cross-section of residents.

Official authorities plan to assess the trial's effectiveness in encouraging e-waste recycling participation before determining whether to expand the programme island-wide. Results will likely inform future strategies for managing Singapore's growing volume of obsolete electronics as consumer device replacement cycles accelerate.
