Thomas Ong, 57, suffered the injury approximately 10 days into what was planned as a 45-day visit to Japan. The incident occurred while he was photographing a waterfall, when he lost his footing on the surrounding terrain.

The fracture has significantly impacted Ong's itinerary, forcing him to curtail his planned activities during the remainder of his stay in Japan. He has since sought medical attention for the injury.

The incident serves as a reminder of the risks posed by uneven terrain and slippery surfaces at popular tourist destinations, particularly when visitors are focused on photography and may not be fully concentrating on their immediate surroundings. Travellers visiting waterfalls and natural attractions in Japan and other destinations are typically advised to wear appropriate footwear and exercise caution in wet or unstable areas.

Travel insurance that covers medical expenses and emergency evacuation is recommended for extended overseas trips, particularly for visitors engaging in activities that may carry elevated injury risk.
