Singapore man jailed for abandoning 71 cats in flat for two years

The man, whose identity has not been disclosed, left the felines in his residential unit for nearly two years without adequate care, food, or sanitation. The prolonged neglect resulted in the deaths of nine cats, while the surviving animals were discovered in poor health and distressing conditions.

Authorities intervened following reports of the situation at the flat. Animal welfare officers found the premises in a severely deteriorated state, with multiple cats suffering from malnutrition, illness, and exposure to unsanitary living conditions. The rescue operation involved removing all remaining animals from the premises for medical treatment and rehabilitation.

The offender pleaded guilty to animal cruelty charges under Singapore's Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. In sentencing him to four months imprisonment, the court emphasized the severity of prolonging such neglect and the suffering inflicted on the animals under his care.

The case has drawn attention from animal welfare advocates, who have called for stricter enforcement of pet ownership regulations and greater public awareness about responsible animal guardianship. Authorities have reiterated that pet abandonment and neglect constitute serious offences that carry criminal penalties.
