A Singapore man has become the latest victim of an impersonation scam conducted through WhatsApp, losing S$1,300 in the process. The victim received messages purportedly from a friend requesting an urgent money transfer to a bank account in Africa, which he complied with before realizing the communication did not originate from his actual contact.

The scammer had managed to gain access to or replicate the victim's friend's WhatsApp account, allowing the fraudster to send messages with sufficient authenticity to convince the victim of the legitimacy of the request. By the time the victim verified the transaction through direct contact with his friend, the funds had already been transferred to the designated African account.

The incident highlights the growing sophistication of social engineering attacks targeting residents through popular messaging platforms. Scammers typically exploit the trust between acquaintances to bypass recipients' natural skepticism, often creating artificial urgency around the financial requests to discourage verification.

Authorities continue to advise the public to verify any unusual financial requests directly with contacts through alternative communication channels before processing transfers. Victims of such scams are urged to report incidents to the police and their banks immediately to maximize the possibility of fund recovery.
