Singapore mulls extending F1 food waste scheme to other major events

The government has not yet determined whether the food waste exemption granted for the Formula 1 Grand Prix will be extended to other major events, Minister Grace Fu indicated on Tuesday. The Return Right F&B scheme, which allows participating food and beverage operators to retain disposable packaging and containers, was introduced as a pilot during this year's F1 race at the Marina Bay circuit. Fu said the National Environment Agency would assess whether other large-scale events could meet the conditions necessary to qualify for similar exemptions. The minister did not specify what those conditions entailed or provide a timeline for any expansion of the scheme. The F1 exemption was granted to reduce waste handling burdens during the high-volume event, which draws significant crowds to Singapore's downtown area. The NEA typically enforces strict regulations requiring F&B operators to manage their own waste disposal, but the pilot scheme offered temporary relief for the motorsport fixture. Fu's comments suggest the government views the F1 trial as a test case that could inform decisions about similar accommodations for other major events, subject to environmental and logistical considerations.
