Singapore pushes to boost bone marrow donor registrations

Approximately 500 bone marrow donor search requests are processed annually in Singapore, yet fewer than 100 culminate in successful transplants, according to transplant authorities. The low conversion rate reflects a persistent gap between patient demand and available donor matches, a challenge that has prompted renewed efforts to expand the donor registry.

Bone marrow transplantation remains a critical treatment option for patients with blood cancers, severe aplastic anaemia, and certain genetic disorders. However, finding compatible donors remains difficult due to the complexity of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) matching requirements. The probability of locating a suitable match increases significantly with a larger and more diverse donor pool.

Healthcare officials have emphasised the importance of public participation in bone marrow donation programmes. Singapore's registry currently relies on voluntary donors, and expanding registrations is seen as essential to improving transplant success rates and reducing waiting times for patients.

The push for increased registrations comes as medical facilities continue to refine transplant procedures and outcomes. Public education campaigns highlighting the life-saving impact of bone marrow donation are expected to form part of the broader strategy to address the donor shortage and ultimately improve survival rates for eligible patients.
