Singapore recovers over $500k from foreign drivers with unpaid fines

Singapore has intensified efforts to collect unpaid traffic fines from foreign drivers, recovering over S$639,000 (approximately US$499,380) during a three-day operation at its land checkpoints. The enforcement action targeted 265 foreign motorists with outstanding penalties, highlighting growing compliance issues among cross-border vehicle operators.

The collection drive comes weeks before Singapore implements stricter border enforcement measures. Starting from an announced date, authorities plan to deny entry permits to vehicles carrying outstanding traffic fines, tightening regulations on foreign motorists who fail to settle penalties incurred while driving in the city-state.

The initiative reflects Singapore's commitment to ensuring compliance with traffic regulations among foreign drivers, who regularly traverse the country's borders via the Causeway and Second Link connecting to Malaysia. Officials have signaled that the new denial-of-entry policy will apply to all vehicles with unresolved fines, regardless of nationality.

The three-day collection effort demonstrates the effectiveness of targeted enforcement operations at key checkpoints. Authorities have not disclosed whether the campaign will continue or if similar operations are planned before the entry permit restrictions take effect.
