Singapore retailers clear drink stocks ahead of Return Right logo deadline

Retailers nationwide are offering significant discounts on beer, tea and other beverages to clear inventory before new regulations take effect. The price reductions reflect efforts by shopkeepers to move existing stock that does not bear the Return Right logo, which will become a legal requirement for all beverage sales from October 1 onwards.

The National Environment Agency has indicated that selling drinks without the logo will constitute an offence under the upcoming regulations. Retailers who fail to comply face potential penalties, prompting many to aggressively discount non-compliant products rather than discard them.

The Return Right logo denotes that beverage containers have been registered under Singapore's beverage container return scheme. The initiative aims to encourage recycling and reduce packaging waste by requiring manufacturers and importers to register their drink products and participate in the container management system.

Industry observers expect the price reductions to continue through late September as retailers work to deplete remaining non-compliant stock. Consumers shopping during this period may find substantial savings on popular drinks, though availability of discounted items may vary by outlet. Once the enforcement date arrives, all beverages offered for sale must display the Return Right logo.
