The victim, a retiree, was approached on the social media platform by a woman who persuaded him to invest in what she described as an AI-powered cryptocurrency mining enterprise. The woman claimed the company utilised advanced robotic technology to generate returns through digital asset mining operations.
Following her solicitation, the retiree transferred funds totalling more than $70,000 into accounts associated with the purported investment scheme. Initial returns were reportedly shown to the investor, creating the appearance of a legitimate operation and encouraging further financial commitment.
The investment subsequently proved fraudulent, with the funds disappearing along with the woman and the promised returns. Authorities have not yet provided details on whether arrests have been made or investigations launched into the scheme.
The incident highlights growing concerns among regulators and law enforcement agencies across Southeast Asia regarding investment scams conducted through social media platforms. Victims are frequently targeted through seemingly personal interactions before being gradually encouraged to commit increasingly larger sums to fraudulent schemes offering unrealistic returns.
